Welcome to the Scarborough Wildlife website
The Scarborough Wildlife website is for anyone
with an interest in the wildlife that can be found in and around
Scarborough (the one in North Yorkshire, England that is - sorry
Canadians).
The word 'wildlife' is used
loosely to include birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles,
butterflies, moths, dragonflies, beetles, spiders, wasps, bees,
flies, insects, trees, plants, flowers, fish, molluscs and even
geology. It used to be known as 'natural history' in the good
old days, but 'wildlife' tends to sound a bit more friendly than
'history', especially to some of the younger generation. Anyway,
take a look around the website and see if anything interests
you. You can always let us know what you think about the site,
and we would like to know what you've been seeing too - so send us
an email (attach photos if you've photographed anything interesting,
we're on broadband) to info@scarboroughwildlife.org.uk
. You don't have to be a member of any organisations to send
us your sightings, everyone can join in. We aim to cover all levels of
expertise, so we are just as interested in hearing about your garden
birds as we are in the arrival of a rare migrant that can only be
positively identified by extracting DNA directly from it's
brain! Photos can also be of landscapes as well as wildlife,
we just ask that you send us information and / or photos which are
fairly recent rather than something that was taken in 1954 on a Box
Brownie camera.
Take a look at the 'Meetings
and Events' page too, to see if any of the items listed there
might be of interest. There are a selection of indoor and
outdoor meetings and you don't have to be either a wildlife expert
or fit enough to run a marathon to take part - in fact, you will
probably survive the indoor meetings even if you are really unfit!
There is also a link on that page that can be used to print out a membership
form if you would like to join the Society. Finally,
if this is your first visit to the website make sure you check out the
'Features' page which has sections on amphibians
in your garden, Badger road casualties
in the Scarborough District, the Betton Bird
of Prey Centre, Chrys Mellor's Greeting
Cards, the 'Garden Centre' Spider, books on 'The
Butterflies of Yorkshire' and 'Fungi
of the Scarborough District', good hygiene when feeding garden
birds, NE Yorkshire Geology Trust, the North Riding Badger Group, Raptor
Viewpoint in Wykeham Forest, reptiles
in your garden, 'Ryedale Rehab'
where Jean Thorpe cares for sick and injured wild animals,
Scarborough's Sea Life Centre and seabird
cruises which are run by RSPB volunteers to see either Puffins
or Skuas and Shearwaters (depending on the time of year). Last
year also saw Scarborough Field Naturalists' Society receive
Lottery funding through the 'Awards for All' scheme. You can
read the details by clicking here. Recent
